Renovation of a Monumental House

Renovation of a Monumental House
Best, Netherlands

2014

In September 2014, base on a requestvof an acquaintance, there has been a proposal made mfor the transformation os a monumental house in Best. The building from beginning of 20th century recently served as an office building. This project has been done in colloboration with bygg architecture.

The building consists of a monumental front building and a ’90s extension on the back. The current layout and the extension make the house unfunctional and dark.

The proposal is about removing part of the extension and adding extra doors to the garden in order to  get more light and better relationship between the living room (in back part) and garden.

Nevetheless, to add a actieve atmoshphere to the house a living kitchen has been created, with dining at street side and big kitchen with cooking island in the middle.

The staircase has been rotated and straightened – to create visual connection between entrance, living and garden. On the end of the axis a fireplace is located, with a built-in bbq on the exterior. Changing the staircase allows opening up space to the first floor to bring extra light to the entrance hall.

On the first floor, the ceilings have been partially removed, to open up space and expose the wooden roof construction and create entresols. Each bedroom gets extra space, which provides flexible usage. Additional roof windows bring extra light and enhance spaciousness.
